Today I am better, can see and am able to do some work.

I am Hasina  Bibi,  38 yrs old female,  from Chakradharpur , Jharkhand . I am married with 4 children. I contracted leprosy 3-4 yrs ago but was on treatment for 1 year from the local doctors. Once my husband came to know about my disease he left me and the children.

I came to the Leprosy Mission Hospital, Purulia in December 2010. For the past one year I was having high fever and painful nodular eruptions would break out all over my body accompanied with severe joint pains. The doctors told me that I had reaction. I was admitted and treatment was started. Initially I was treated with injections. I also developed other problems like diabetes and hypertension. I also had necrotizing and purulent eruptions all over my body and the doctors told that I had to take another medicine. A drug called Thalidomide was given to me.
The new medicine was started in May 2011. Meanwhile I developed multiple abscesses all over my body for which multiple incision and drainage procedures had to be done.  Slowly thalidomide started its effect. Slow tapering of steroids was done and could be stopped 21/22 months later. I was also given  blood transfusions and dietary support all the time. Finally my condition improved and I was discharged in October 2011.
I was again readmitted for the same complication 3 weeks later. I was given medicines and was able to go home in March 2012.
Gradually I started developing diminution of vision in my eyes. The doctors told me I had developed cataract in both the eyes. Cataract surgery was done in December 2012 on my Right eye. Now I can see clearly with my Right Eye. The doctors told me that they will operate the Left Eye later.
I am still on medicines for my reactions.  My sister takes care of me and my children. My youngest 2 children are in school. The others left their studies when I was admitted in the hospital. Today I am better, can see and am able to do some work.
